Wooster Community Gardens

Repurposing vacant properties in Wooster into Gardens and Green Spaces

about

Twenty some years ago we started with an abandoned property on Buckeye Street and turned it into a green space for the community to gather in friendship, to have lunch, to read or just relax. Then we introduced neighborhood cookouts to discourage crime and drugs, and to instill a sense of community.

Once other properties became available, we repurposed those into free community gardens to encourage families to grow their own produce and to share with others if they so wished.

We now have 3 community gardens and are hoping to add another in 2025, plus a possible new green space in ‘25 or ‘26. We have also designed and built, with volunteers, several raised gardens for the Nick Amster Workshop in Wooster.

the Gardens

Gardens are offered at zero cost for neighbors to plant, manage and harvest their own gardens. Tools, water, compost or fertilizer are provided. We also have fruit trees, wild berries, and try to provide pumpkins, or strawberries depending upon the location, etc. All gardens have a shed to store the gardening items.

the Greenspaces

You are invited to use the green spaces to hang out with family and friends, have lunch, read or just chill from it all. We have seasonal cookouts and the community is invited to join us. If you wish to hold an event, or have a larger group gathering, please contact us ahead of time to check availability. Donations are always accepted to help maintain these areas and to upgrade and to acquire new properties.
